Hello everyone!! How are you today? well guys I want to share about one of the linguistic branches in semantics. Just keep on reading❤️
What does semantics study??
Semantics is the study of meaning, but what do we mean by "meaning"?
Meaning has been given different definition in the past.
Semantics also look at the ways in which the meaning of words can be related each other. Here are a few of the ways in which words can be semantically related:
1. Synonymy
1. Synonymy
Synonymy is a word that has the same or similar meaning.
e.g:
2. Antonymy
Antonymy is a word that has opposite meaning.
e.g:
3. Polysemy
Polysemy is a word or phrase with different, but related sense.
e.g : wood > a piece of a tree
> a geographical area with many trees
4. Homonymy
Homonymy is a word that share the same spelling and the same pronunciation but have different meaning.
e.g : Right vs Write
Pray vs Prey

Hi Siska, what's the purpose of learn about polysemy and homonymy instead we have already known about synonym and antonym
BalasHapusOkay Mutia thanks for your question.. Before I answer the purpose of learn about polysemy and homonymy, I wanna tell you the definition of both by expert. According to Ullman (1967:159) defines polysemy as a “situation” in which the same word has two or more different meanings but has related sense. And then according to Richards and Schmidt 2002:241;and for lexical items that are identical in spelling and pronunciation but have different meanings. So, from these definition I can conclude that the purpose of studying polysemy and homonymy is to know what someone means, The more you know about a meaning of words, the more you get knowledge of possibility of the word with different meanings.
HapusHeiii siska please answerit
BalasHapushow do you find out the word synonym for people who are hard to understand a word and give me an understanding of the synonyms of the experts and also give reasons for that so I understand
Hello Nelia.. Okay, If the speakers has an obscure pronunciation you can ask them to spelling the word so you can hear with clearly and you will know what the synonym of.
HapusOhhhh i know
HapusHello siska, i want know why you choose synonym in semantic. Who is the target that you must teach for these synonyms, children?
BalasHapusHello Putri. I choose synonym in semantics because semantics also looks at the ways in which the meanings of words can be related to each other and synonym is one of the ways in which words can be semantically related. And of course the children is my target. Because the children must know about synonym or other, so they will have more knowledge about the related of word:)
HapusWhat do you mean by saying "Meaning has been given different definition in the past." is it according to experts or according to what u think? Can you show me an accurate source who give that statement?
BalasHapusHello Indaah.. I write that definition is according to expert. This is the link http://all-about-linguistics.group.shef.ac.uk/branches-of-linguistics/semantics/what-does-semantics-study/
HapusOkay but when i visited the link it said "Not secure" which mean it could be not true

BalasHapusHello Novia.. If on conversation you must know what you are talking about. prey and pray have a very far meaning, so to find out prey for mangsa and pray for berdoa, you have to know what content is talk about.

HapusHi sis ,
BalasHapusPlease give me definition at least 3 expert who explain about semantics ..thankyou
Hello tak Clik..
Hapus1. According to Euzenat, semantics "provides the rules for interpreting the syntax which do not provide the meaning directly but constrains the possible interpretations of what is declared."
2. According to Keith Allan Semantics is the study and representation of the meaning of every kind of constituent and
expression (from morph to discourse) in human languages, and also of the meaning
relationships among them.
3. According to Frawley, (1992: 1) Semantics is the study of linguistic meaning.
Does the synonym between two different words forever have the same meaning?
BalasHapusHello Lana. Yes of course.. example is large and big. Large and big have the same meaning that is BESAR, so forever they will have the same meaning:*
Hapuswhen the word 'angry' is used? and why we used 'mad' also?
BalasHapusHello Avivah, In the US or Canada, "mad" is interpreted as angry but in informal use. Whereas in other regions or countries, generally madness is used in a sense. Madness here is not only mentally disturbed but can also be madness or enthusiasm for something, like being crazy about hobbies or really like using certain clothes / costumes. whereas Angry or Anger can be interpreted as human emotions in the form of dislike of something. Simply put; angry. For example, when you are ridiculed someone usually feels angry and tends to want to reciprocate. Different from mad words that have various alternative meanings, angry has no other meaning. The example of using mad: Is jane still mad at me?. The example of using angry: Mom was angry at me because I didn’t tell her that I went back home late last night. Is that clear Vivah?
HapusHey. Can you explain more about polysemy? and give more examples. Thankyou
BalasHapusHello Cika. A polysemy is a word or symbol that has more than one meaning. The examples is:
Hapus1. 'FIX'. It has many meanings such as attach, Arrange, Get ready (food or drinks), repair, punish, set right.
2.Accept ( take willingly, receive as suitable, agree, admit (responsibility), to believe that something is true.
3.Table (a piece of furniture, dining table, facts / numbers, maths, (multiplication / addition tables, (V) to present.
4.Count (to say the numbers in the right order, to calculate, include, consider, (n) total, saying numbers, measurement.
